Duke Energy donation will transform Brockington Elementary’s media center

STAFF REPORTS

FLORENCE — The library collection at Brockington Elementary Magnet School will soon see a transformation thanks to a $10,000 donation from Duke Energy.

Mindy Taylor, government and community relations manager for Duke Energy, drove to Brockington Thursday morning to present a check to Principal Wanda Williams-Parrott and media specialist Mary Hall-Kellar.

“Investing in education is so important, especially in the early years,” Taylor said. “Duke Energy is proud to partner with Florence 1 Schools and help improve the library for students at Brockington Elementary School.”

Money from Duke Energy will be used to buy more than 500 new books, including newer titles like Ada Twist Scientist that encourage students to explore science, technology, engineering and math, as well as very appreciated as The Pigeon Has to Go to. School, The Berenstain Bears and the Babysitters Club.

Hall-Kellar told her visitors she couldn’t wait for them to see how different the library will be the next time they’re in Brockington, between the new collection of books and the renovations Florence 1 is doing to school.

“I’m so excited about the changes we’re making,” Hall-Kellar said. “We are updating the whole library and it will be completely different. We’re getting new seats for the kids so they can come in and read whenever they want. We are getting so many new books from the Duke Energy donation. It is spectacular for our children.

Florence 1 Schools Board Chairman Porter Stewart said he is grateful that Duke Energy is partnering with the district to provide more resources for students.

“We are thrilled with Duke Energy’s donation to the Brockington Elementary Media Center,” said Stewart. “The money will allow for additional improvements that staff want to make. Best of all, these funds are being made available now, where those needs can be met, and early enough in the school year for students to get the most out of them.

Parrott said partnerships with organizations like Duke Energy mean a lot to her because of the opportunities they provide for her students.

“Our appreciation for Duke Energy’s donation goes beyond what words can describe,” Parrot said. “We are grateful to them for making a difference through their compassion and generous donations.”
