“Let’s go”, “Following the reports of many media”
Chelsea, along with Fabrizio Romano, have apparently targeted Brighton & Hove Albion after agreeing a deal to sign Marc Cucurella from the Seagulls.
Chelsea have officially announced their fifth summer transfer window signing. They acquired the services of Cucurella from Premier League rivals Brighton in a deal worth £62m.
The Blues’ statement ended a brief transfer saga involving the Spain international. The player was the subject of serious interest from Pep Guardiola’s Manchester City before the London giants stepped in.
Manchester City walked away from the deal after having a £40m bid rejected by Brighton. This allowed Chelsea to take a free kick when signing the former left-back from Barcelona.
Romano then revealed Wednesday that Thomas Tuchel’s side reached an agreement with Brighton to sign Cucurella. The Seagulls, however, quickly took to social media to refute those claims.
In a statement from the club on Twitter, they said:
“Contrary to the inaccurate reports from many media tonight, no agreement has been reached with any club to sell Marc Cucurella.”
However, Romano stuck to his guns and maintained that Cucurella was on his way to Stamford Bridge. The transfer guru has now proved it right, with Chelsea confirming the transfer today (August 5).
The Blues also took the opportunity to jibe Brighton by issuing a statement similar to the one the Seagulls released on Wednesday. Announcing the signing of Cucurella, they wrote on Twitter:
“Following extensive media reports this week, we can confirm that an agreement has been reached with Brighton and Hove Albion for the signing of Marc Cucurella.”
Romano, who faced criticism and mockery following Brighton’s statement, also got in on the act. Under the Chelsea post, he wroteaccompanied by a smiley face emoji with open hands:
“Here we are.”
Chelsea’s Levi Colwill joins Brighton on loan
It has been widely reported that the Blues could offer Levi Colwill in a swap deal for Cucurella. However, it has also been suggested that the teenager’s transfer will be independent of the left-back deal.
Anyway, the centre-back has now completed his move to Brighton. The Seagulls have acquired the 19-year-old from the Blues on loan until the end of the 2022-23 season.
Colwill spent last season on loan at Championship side Huddersfield Town. He made 32 appearances in all competitions for the Terriers, contributing three goals in the process.
