Like many arts organizations Pittsburgh Media Arts Center in Japan I had to pivot during the pandemic. The classroom was virtualized and studio membership was closed until Pennsylvania entered the green phase in 2020. But now student and member work is showcased at the annual student and member exhibitions. by PCA & M.

The opening reception for the exhibition will take place on Friday July 23 in the lobby of the Scaife building, featuring works by 45 students and members of various media including ceramics, drawings, paintings, ironwork, prints and photographs. “One of the most exciting aspects of such an event is seeing the quality of work produced by students and members,” says Kylehauser, Executive Director of PCA & M. “It is important for us to take the time to recognize their efforts and growth as artists.

The ongoing online PCA & M conversion was to be continued ahead of the pandemic, but safety guidelines and precautions during COVID caused PCA & M to prioritize a new approach. “In the past, we had small exhibitions in the Scaife building, usually to showcase artists, students and members of our teachers,” says Houser. “It’s a unique space, and it makes perfect sense for us to exhibit our work next to the studio in which it was created.

PCA&M has no plans to relaunch the film program, but offers a variety of courses in photography, film, creative audio, and screen lighting. Artist Access membership also includes access to PCA & M’s 12-bay darkroom, printers and scanners.

PCA & M also offers artist access subscriptions for ceramic and printing studios.

Going forward, PCA&M plans to focus on educational programs, membership, and artist services in response to dwindling opportunities for artists during a pandemic.

“We want to rebuild in a way that keeps artists and students at the forefront of our mission,” says Hauser. “This includes providing opportunities for students and members to showcase their work, develop their expertise, network and collaborate with other artists. “
