Pollara: 90% of Canadians think it’s important for local media to survive

TORONTO–(BUSINESS WIRE)–News Media Canada has released the results of a survey of Canadians’ opinions on the importance of local media. The investigation revealed:

  • 90% of Canadians believe it is important for local media to survive.

  • 79% of Canadians agree that web giants should share their revenues with Canadian media.

  • 80% of Canadians support Parliament passing legislation that would allow small media outlets to bargain collectively with web giants.

“Canadians value their local media and they believe that web giants should share some of their revenue with Canadian media,” said Paul Deegan, President and CEO of News Media Canada. a law that would allow smaller outlets to bargain collectively with web giants. It is time for parliamentarians to pass C-18, the online information act.

“There is majority support for forcing web giants to share their revenue with Canadian media among survey respondents in cities and rural communities, among young and old, and across partisan lines. said Dan Arnold, director of strategy at Pollara. “It means that Canadians who consume their news in different ways can all agree on the importance of this issue.

This poll was conducted by Pollara Strategic Insights, on behalf of News Media Canada, via an online survey of 1,500 Canadian adults conducted between May 20 and May 26, 2022. Data was weighted by region, gender and age based on the most recent census data, so as to be representative of all Canadians. The margin of error for a probability sample of this size is ±2.5%, 19 times out of 20.
