Print has become the most credible media vehicle for news compared to other traditional and digital media platforms, according to a latest survey by media consulting firm Ormax Media. In terms of credibility, print media lead the way with 62 percent of the News Credibility Index, followed by radio with 57 percent and TV news with 56 percent.

The results came at a time when it is becoming increasingly difficult to distinguish between fact and fiction on social media platforms and fake news is becoming a growing threat.

Ormax Media’s “News Credibility Index” survey takes into account responses from 2,400 urban news consumers over 15 years of age from 17 states and EU territories in India.

According to the report, 61% of news consumers view fake news as a top concern.

“Fake news concerns have been a topic of discussion around the world, as well as in India, and the fake news problem appears to be getting worse with each passing month,” said Shailesh Kapoor, Founder and CEO of Ormax Media.

“I have no doubt that the print media will remain the most credible medium for many years to come. When you see it on paper, it is the most organized and verified report. That’s why people wait for the newspaper to confirm what they read on digital or social media, ”said Sivakumar Sundaram, chairman of the BCCL executive committee. “In India, newspapers are not just a provider of information, but an integral part of our daily life,” he added.

“Going forward, we plan to conduct this survey every six months to track consumer news perceptions regarding fake news over time,” Kapoor added.

He told ET that ideally TV news should be on par with print news, but it is not and it turns out to be “a big deal” for television.

The survey also sidelines assumptions that traditional media lose credibility faster and that digital information will retain an advantage over traditional media.

Kapoor added, “This survey was conducted to quantify the extent of this concern in India and to understand whether some media are doing better than others. We plan to track these metrics every six months, which will allow us to compare changes in consumers’ perceptions of information about fake news over time.
