UM Broadcast Media Center is looking for a Chief Engineer



The University of Montana and the Broadcast Media Center are calling for applications for a Chief Engineer for the MontanaPBS and Montana Public Radio broadcast facilities. The Chief Engineer will be responsible for the design, implementation, maintenance and proper operation of all technical aspects of the engineering of television and radio stations.

The Chief Engineer must be committed to providing timely and quality service in the management of financial, physical, and human resources in support of the University of Montana Media Outreach Center. This position reports to the Technical Director of the Broadcast Media Center.

Job details
The position is full-time, 1.0 FTE, MUS professional contract and includes a comprehensive and competitive benefit package including insurance program, mandatory retirement plan, partial tuition waiver and program of well-being.

The salary for this position is commensurate with qualifications.

Required Skills

  • Demonstrated working knowledge of radio and television transmitters
  • Demonstrated ability to diagnose and repair broadcast related equipment at the component level
  • Demonstrated working knowledge of LAN and WAN networking best practices
  • Demonstrated proficiency using general test equipment including multimeters, oscilloscopes, spectrum analyzers, etc.
  • Demonstrated proficiency with general and specialty computer word processing, spreadsheets, databases and drawing programs
  • Knowledge of FCC release requirements
  • Knowledge of digital television systems theory
  • Knowledge of HD SD-SDI quality control for video and audio level and synchronization
  • Knowledge of the safety procedures required to repair, adjust and operate high power high voltage transmitters
  • Basic skills in fabrication and welding
  • The ability to exercise diplomacy and good judgment

Experience required

  • Two (2) years of post-secondary technical training specializing in broadcast engineering, information technology, electronic communications or a closely related field plus three (3) years of full-time (or part-time equivalent) experience ) in any of the above fields or an equivalent combination of relevant education and experience.
  • Must currently own or be eligible to obtain a valid Montana driver’s license by the start date and have an acceptable driving record (less than 10 points).

Preferred skills

  • Certification by the Society of Broadcast Engineers (SBE)
  • Demonstrated proficiency in computer networks and computer systems
  • Demonstrated experience in live digital television production engineering in studio and remotely
  • Demonstrated ability to manage all technical aspects of a broadcast facility
  • The candidate is able to perform work at all studio sites and transmitter sites
  • Demonstrated ability to monitor and respond to remote transmitters 24/7
  • Demonstrated experience with audio / video routing systems
  • Demonstrated ability to troubleshoot and repair RF transmitters and systems
  • Knowledge of remote control systems (Davicom, Burk, Gentner)
  • Knowledge of proper grounding procedures for lightning protection and interference reduction
  • Knowledge of three-phase electrical distribution and wiring requirements
  • Demonstrated experience, skills and ability to access geographically difficult sites via a 4×4 vehicle, snowmobile and snowshoes.

Physical demands
Qualified candidates should be able to meet the minimum requirements and perform the main duties of the position with or without reasonable accommodation.

Must be able to perform: ability to lift up to 75 lbs; travel and work in extreme weather conditions; hiking (and / or skiing) to remote sites; reach, climb, crouch, balance, twist, crawl and kneel; ability to drive snowmobiles, 4×4 trucks and tow a trailer safely; ability to travel to and from remote locations safely in all weather conditions and at any time of day; work under stressful circumstances in all weather conditions requiring mobility and physical demands.
